Rand Scot Smithey

Originally a painter and ceramicist, Rand Scot Smithey began to do sculptural work in steel and other metals more than a decade ago.
Rand’s studio practice always begins outside the studio. His work derives directly from a need to describe and interpret the world we all live in and rely on. While the sculptures are not always recognizable as objects from our world, they are always guided by specific references.
Sometimes there are explicit symbols. For instance, a ladder is a metaphor for aspiration. It symbolizes our need to become more than we are, more than we think we can be, more than others expect of us. It’s about transcendence.
But most of the time there are no explicit symbols, only the feeling that curve and angle and color can impart on a viewer. Connotation is everything. What you see is what you see, and what you feel is what you feel.
From these references he creates a particular visual language and applies it his paintings and sculpture.
Rand’s sculpture has been exhibited in a number of galleries and shows in Oregon. His work is included in private and corporate collections throughout the country.

With my sculpture I try to create an embrace of forms expressing movement and balance. Often, a sphere holds the center while arcing shapes dance in orbit. In each piece I strive to achieve a union of independent energies around a common center. Many of these sculptures follow from the collaborative work I do with my wife and partner, Holly.
