Pulling together diverse components of his background in art and surfing, he designs \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003esculpture that could be characterized as abstract-organic. Function dictates form to some degree \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003ein a kinetic work and much of the focus is involved in positioning the elusive “center of gravity” \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003eto obtain the best balance, then letting the form evolve from these parameters. \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003eHis work is primarily stainless steel or corten steel beams cantilevered, compound pendulums \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003ethat imply mass that is belied by the impression of weightless motion. There arrives a \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003equintessential moment in the creation of kinetic work, when the pieces move, seemingly on their \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003eown for the first time, in patterns that will rearrange themselves through the years. In search of \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003econtrast, Tyler combines various types of steel in his sculptures. Stainless steel lends itself to \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003ebrush patterns, which give a holographic effect as they move, reflecting sunlight. Corten steel is \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003every receptive to patina and can look ancient or organic. \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003eAlways one to appreciate motion for it’s own sake when well executed; Tyler enjoys exploring \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003edifferent oceans and waves while surfing the globe. He reveled in his career as a professional \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003efree surfer, traveling the world making cinematic surf films and editorials. When Tyler was not \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003etraveling, he was at home in his remote studio in the vibrant oak forrest where he learned the art \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003eof sculpture, metal working, wood working, and of course the beautifully illusive act of balance \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003efrom his father and renowned kinetic sculptor John Tyler. Tyler has worked under his father for \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003emore than two decades and has not only continued his father’s art, but elevated the sculptures \u003c\/i\u003e\u003ci\u003ewith his exquisite finishing and eye for design.
