Molly Reeves
Painter
Originally Molly Reeves painted in oils, receiving a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts (Painting) from Portland State University. In the 1980's she continued her passion for design, receiving a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University. In the 90’s, Molly was able to return to her roots and concentrate exclusively on painting. In addition to studio & plein air work, she has studied a variety of painting methods during the past few years with other well-known artists, including Ted Nuttall, Arnie Westerman, George James, and Alex Powers. Molly’s work has been displayed locally and nationally, and she has received numerous awards for her work.
These paintings reflect my formal art education and a deep understanding of composition, color theory, drawing, and painting. My process varies, but typically I will spend time with the subject and build understanding through photographs, informal sketches and color studies. During the painting process, color is carefully placed layer by layer on the surface. Gradually, the elements emerge and the details are revealed. As a native Oregonian and a world traveler, I am inspired by my surroundings; seeking to explore the extraordinary within the ordinary. For me it is all about intention; examples might be: what kind of story do I want to tell, or where do I want to take the viewer. Long before I pick up the brush I am constantly observing different aspects of reality and mining my memory, quite naturally the two become fused. My desire through this reconciliation of observed reality and related memories is to create a two dimensional fiction that authentically tells a deeper and more thoughtful truth.
